What is JUVÉDERM®?

JUVÉDERM® is designed to treat a wide range of needs.1-9

JUVÉDERM® is a collection of injectable facial fillers that can help enhance your facial features by plumping
lips,1-3,10 smoothing wrinkles,1,2,7-9 or restoring lost facial volume.1,5,6
Products from the JUVÉDERM® range help deliver results that may look and feel natural.*,†10-14 Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in our skin.15-17 All JUVÉDERM® fillers contain the active ingredient, hyaluronic acid, of non-animal origin.1-9

*Tissue integration was demonstrated by Juvéderm® VOLBELLA, Juvéderm® VOLIFT, Juvéderm® VOLUMA and Juvéderm® VOLUX at 1 and 4 weeks in animal in vivo studies.12,13
†In an in vivo study, a filler that has integrated with the tissue may give a natural look and feel.14

** Based on a search of published clinical studies of hyaluronic acid facial fillers in November 2019. A duration of 24 months was established in Juvéderm® VOLUMA with lidocaine, depending on the treatment area chosen.21

What are facial fillers?

Facial fillers are injectable gels used to restore1,5,6 or add volume1,2,5,6 to the face.

There are different facial fillers for different treatments13 – whether that’s helping to provide a lifted look,2,5,6,8 contouring effect,1,9 creating symmetry,1 filling in lines or deep folds,2-4,8,9 or enhancing a particular feature like the lips.1-3,10

As we age, our skin renews itself more slowly.24-26 This is in part due to a loss of hyaluronic acid,24,26 as well a loss of collagen and elastin.24,26 This can sometimes result in dry, thin skin and the appearance of wrinkles and folds.24,26

Hyaluronic acid facial fillers like JUVÉDERM® contain a form of hyaluronic acid1-9 that is injected directly into the skin and can help reduce the signs of ageing,27-30 or add volume1,5,6 — either by restoring volume lost over time or providing additional enhancement. Some hyaluronic acid facial fillers can also add deep long-lasting hydration to the skin.‡4,16,31,32

‡Skin hydration was measured using the MoistureMeterD instrument with the XS 5 and S 15 probes (depth of effective measurement: 0.5 and 1.5 mm, respectively). Instrument measures of skin hydration, smoothness, and skin deformation parameters were performed on the cheek, forehead, and neck of one side of the face on Day 0 and at 30 days after initial treatment (before touch up), Months 1, 4, 6, and 9 after the last treatment, and Month 1R. Skin hydration was measured using the MoistureMeterD instrument (n=131) and top-up treatment administered at Day 30 (n=31).32

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin.15-17 It maintains hydration by binding with water molecules.15,27

Preparing for your treatment with JUVÉDERM®

Here are some things to consider before treatment, or to discuss during your consultation:

1. How do you want to look after treatment?
2. What’s your practitioner’s experience with fillers? And knowledge of facial anatomy?
3. Can they share any before and after pictures? This can help give you a clear idea of what may be possible to achieve. Individual treatment results may vary.
4. Talk about potential side effects, how to minimise risks, and after care.

Like all medical procedures, treatments with JUVÉDERM® may cause side effects.1-9 To minimise the risks of potential side effects, JUVÉDERM® should only be administered by medical practitioners who have appropriate training and experience in injection techniques, and are knowledgeable about the anatomy at and around the site of injection.1-9 By requesting JUVÉDERM® treatment by name, and finding out if it is suitable for you, your experience may be built around JUVÉDERM®’s heritage of quality, science and meaningful innovation.§35

Your healthcare practitioner will ask about your medical history to determine if JUVÉDERM® products are appropriate for you and contact the nearest medical aesthetic practice (the “Locator”).

Tell your healthcare practitioner if you have:1-9

• Severe allergies with a history of anaphylaxis, multiple severe allergies, allergies to hyaluronic acid or other filler products, or allergies to lidocaine or other local anesthetics.
• A history of autoimmune disease, recurrent sore throats, rheumatic fever, epilepsy, or porphyria.

The following are important treatment considerations for you to discuss with your healthcare practitioner before treatment in order to help avoid unsatisfactory results and complications:1-9

• You are currently taking medications which prolong bleeding, such as acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or anticoagulants – as with any injection, you may experience prolonged bleeding. You should inform your healthcare practitioner about any medications you are currently taking.
• You have recently had laser treatment, deep chemical peels or dermabrasion. If you have had surface peels and the inflammatory reaction generated is significant, it is not recommended to inject Juvéderm products.
• You have skin infections or inflammation such as acne or herpes.
• You tend to develop scars.
• You are pregnant or breastfeeding, or you are under the age of 18 years, as the safety of JUVÉDERM® products has not been established for that age.

Are there any side effects from JUVÉDERM®?

Like all medical procedures, treatments with JUVÉDERM® may cause side effects.1-9 These may occur immediately after your treatment, or they may be delayed. Side effects can include (but are not limited to) the following:1-9

- Inflammatory reactions: redness (erythema), swelling (oedema)
- Bruising (haematoma)
- Firmness/bumps (induration or nodules) at the injection site
- Staining or discolouration of the injection site
- Poor effect or weak filling/restoration effect
- Abscesses, granuloma and immediate or delayed hypersensitivity
- Rare but serious adverse events associated with intravascular injection including: temporary or permanent vision impairment, blindness, brain damage (cerebral ischemia) or brain bleed (cerebral haemorrhage) leading to stroke, skin necrosis and damage to underlying structures
- Injection should be stopped immediately if you exhibit any of the following symptoms: changes in vision, signs of stroke, blanching of the skin or unusual pain, during or shortly after the procedure.

To minimise the risks of potential side effects, JUVÉDERM® should only be administered by medical practitioners who have appropriate training and experience in injection techniques, and are knowledgeable about the anatomy at and around the site of injection.1-9 By requesting JUVÉDERM® treatment by name, and finding out if it is suitable for you, your experience may be built around JUVÉDERM®’s heritage of quality, science and meaningful innovation.§35

If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor, pharmacist or nurse. This includes any possible side effects not listed in the package leaflet.

Key Takeaways

You may experience some side effects from your JUVÉDERM® treatment.
These may occur immediately after your treatment, or they may be delayed.1-9

It’s important to ensure that your aesthetic practitioner is experienced in using JUVÉDERM® before your treatment.1-9 You may find photos of their previous results to be useful when choosing who to go to. Individual treatment results may vary.

Consider asking for JUVÉDERM® by name to find out if these treatments are suitable for you.

What can I expect during my JUVÉDERM® consultation?

During consultation your provider will take the time to understand what you’re looking to achieve and create a unique treatment plan based on your desires and needs.22 They will assess your face while it is moving and static for the best result and may recommend a holistic treatment plan that targets multiple areas of the face to create balance and facial harmony.22,25,37 Like any medical procedure, it’s important to get to know the products and procedures that will be used, and what you can expect before, during, and after treatment.22 You’ll also want to talk a bit about your overall health with your provider in order to make the best possible decisions about a treatment plan that’s tailored to you.22

‡‡A holistic treatment approach involves considering the patient’s entire face38

What does the treatment process look like?

Following a consultation, your provider will arrange to inject the areas of the face that require treatment, according to your treatment plan.39

Treatment times depend on the product used and the area treated. However, they are specific to each individual and may vary depending on the treatment plan that is created for you by your provider. You may begin to see the volumising effect of Juvéderm® VOLBELLA and Juvéderm® VOLUMA immediately after treatment.33,34 Most people can return to their normal routine on the day after they are treated, depending on the treatment they receive.31

Model has been treated with JUVÉDERM®. Individual results may vary.

Are JUVÉDERM® treatments painful?

JUVÉDERM® facial fillers contain lidocaine, a local anaesthetic that can help reduce any discomfort you may feel during treatment.1-9

When considering how painful the treatment is, everyone is different and therefore has different pain thresholds. However, your provider will do all they can to ensure you are comfortable.

Key Takeaways

JUVÉDERM® treatment times depend on the product used and the area treated.

JUVÉDERM® treatments offer minimal downtime so you can soon get back to doing the things you love. Most patients were able to return to normal daily social activities a day after injection.31

Many JUVÉDERM® facial fillers contain lidocaine, which is a mild local anaesthetic that helps to numb the area of injection1-9

How much does JUVÉDERM® treatment cost?

The cost of your JUVÉDERM® treatment will be determined by the treatment plan created by your provider. Variables that affect the cost of your treatment include the number of areas on your face being treated, the total volume of product used during your treatment, and your choice of clinician.

For example, a holistic treatment plan that includes treatments in the cheeks, around the eyes, and in the lips is likely to cost more than a treatment in one area of the face like the lips. Based on the clinic you choose and what you’re looking to achieve, your provider will suggest a treatment plan and explain the specific costs before your treatment begins.

††Responder rate (improvement of appearance in both eyes) of 54% at 12 months (n=80).40
‡‡ After treatment, Juvéderm® VOLBELLA improved lip fullness for up to 12 months in 48% of patients (n=58), including those who received repeat treatment.10 In the study, 60 patients received initial treatment overall and 15 patients received top-up treatment at 2 weeks.10 Study product did not contain lidocaine.10
§§ A prospective, single-blind, controlled study enrolled subjects aged ≥18 years with chin retrusion (glabellasubnasale-pogonion facial angle 145°-165°). Assessments included mean facial-angle change from baseline, Global Aesthetic Improvement Scale (GAIS) responder rates (improved/much improved), improvements in 3 subject-reported FACE-Q scales, and safety. 119 subjects received initial Juvéderm® VOLUX treatment and 89 received repeat treatment. Mean changes (95% confidence interval) in glabella-subnasale-pogonion angle from baseline for treatment and control groups, respectively, were:1.15° (0.75°, 1.56°) and 1.16° (0.57°, 1.75°) at month 18, and 3.14° (2.68°, 3.61°) and 2.72° (1.78°, 3.66°) 1 month after repeat treatment (subjects could receive a single repeat treatment during months 18 to 24). Investigators rated 52.5%/60.0% of treated/control subjects at month 18 and 96.9%/100% after retreatment as GAIS responders; subject-reported rates were 62.0%/64.0% and 93.8%/100%. The safety profile was as expected.42
¶¶ Adults with chin retrusion were randomized (3:1) to receive VYC-20L in the chin at study onset (treatment group) or 6 months later (control group). The primary effectiveness end point was 1-point improvement on the Allergan Chin Retrusion Scale (ACRS) from baseline at Month 6. Safety assessments included injection site responses (ISRs) and adverse events (AEs). Juvéderm® VOLUMA was administered to 192 participants (treatment group, n 5 144; control group, n 5 48). At Month 6, significantly more participants had an ACRS response in the treatment versus control group (56.3% vs 27.5%; p=0.0019). Treatment benefit remained evident at Month 12. Most common ISRs were tenderness (81.1%) and firmness (75.1%). One participant (0.5%) discontinued the study due to 2 treatment-related serious AEs of facial cellulitis and injection site inflammation, both resolved without sequelae.43

JUVÉDERM® is not permanent, is it?

No, the active ingredient in JUVÉDERM®, hyaluronic acid, is naturally metabolised by your body over time15,16,45 – meaning that while JUVÉDERM® can help you achieve results that last from 9-24 months depending on the particular filler used and areas treated,18-20 your results are considered non- permanent and your enhancements from treatment will gradually fade away over time.15,16,45

Key Takeaways

Your provider will work with you to build a personal plan, which includes cost of treatment.22

JUVÉDERM® lasts up to 9–24 months depending on treatment type and product chosen.18-20
